By William M. Welch, USA TODAY The USA has been ravaged through mid-May by a near-record number of
tornadoes that has pushed the death toll — including 47 killer twisters
over the weekend — to a 10-year high.
The deaths of 98 people attributed to tornadoes this year has made
2008 the deadliest year thus far for tornadoes since 1998 and the
seventh deadliest since modern recordkeeping began in 1950, The Weather
Channel said.
Such a rate could make 2008 the year with the most tornadoes since 1950. "We are on a pace that continues a record number" of twisters, said
Greg Forbes, severe weather expert at The Weather Channel.

Fay, Gustav, Hanna, Ike - It isn't over yet!
What makes you so safe?
What if your county clerk's office was wiped out by
flood or fire, along with the bank that housed your safe deposit vault?
How do you go about replacing a birth certificate or marriage license
that was destroyed? Just think about the hassle involved in
actually proving your marriage! After the infrastructure was
restored, you might have to go so far as to gather witnesses to the
ceremony!
Wouldn't it be so much easier just to
print off a copy of the document and give it to officials? They
would have
to accept it, since that document would be the only proof
that exists! The same goes for almost anything else on paper that
we depend on in this modern age.
Even digitally
stored documents might be destroyed. Are you sure that all the
agencies involved have "off-site" backup facilities that are out of the
danger area? All too often we find out, after the fact, that what
we thought was true was not. Recent history is proof enough
of that.
